One of the revelations of spring training who positioned himself as arguably the top pitching prospect in the Cardinals' organization will miss most of the next year after having elbow surgery, two sources confirmed to the Post-Dispatch after an initial report.
Tekoah Roby had Tommy John surgery this past week that will end his season and require a lengthy rehab into the 2026 year. Depending on his individual recover, he could miss the entire 2026 season as he readies for 2027.
The Athletic first reported on the surgery Monday morning and noted that it took place Friday.
Two sources later confirmed that report for the Post-Dispatch. The Cardinals have not made any official comment, and when asked in recent weeks about Roby's health officials offered no details. He went on the injured list officially on July 14.
A prize acquisition of the Cardinals' 2023 trade deadline sell-off, Roby surged to prominence this past spring and asserted himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the organization. The 23-year-old right-hander sports a high-octane fastball that carries at the top of the zone and can be a swing-and-miss pitch. He began the season at Class AA Springfield and vaulted to Class AAA Memphis after going 4-2 with a 2.49 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 47 innings over 10 starts for the Springfield (Missouri) Cardinals.

Roby is on the 40-player roster, and while the Cardinals can clear a spot on the roster by transferring him to the 60-day injured list if needed, they will have to move him back to the 40 to protect him from December's Rule 5 draft.
The Cardinals acquired Roby from Texas in the package of players that included Thomas Saggese and John King in exchange for Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton. Roby was injured at the time of the trade, and he entered spring training after making some offseason adjustments to his workouts that he felt would help him with his durability over the long haul of a season.
