I thank Lynn Schmidt for sharing the personal situation she decided was needed for her health ("My double mastectomy won't change who I am," May 11). But the comparison in the op-ed between Schmidt and the 18-year-old person who went through a similar surgery seems to be mostly an unknown and therefore untold story.
I am a 74-year-old male and I was curious, due to a conversation with a friend, so I did a bit of research into human gender determination. It is much too complex a process for me to relate here other than to say that the X and Y chromosomes are nowhere near the sole determination in what makes male and female human gender.
I wish that 18-year-old would tell us their story, possibly along with a gender-determination expert's discussion of the subject. We could, all of us, learn much more about this intricate subject. Knowledge enables us to make better decisions.Â
