A new study on the effects of e-cigarettes finds an increase in heart rate and blood pressure in young people after vaping. The research was conducted by Michigan Technological University on a group of healthy 20-year-old nonsmokers. Each volunteer participated in two vaping sessions, separated by a month, and used e-cigarettes containing nicotine. The blood pressure and heart rate both increased when the volunteers used the e-cigarettes. However, during the recovery period, the heart rate dropped back to normal ranges while blood pressure remained high. E-cigarettes have been marketed to teens and young adults as a healthier alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes. The effects of smoking tobacco have been well documented but research into vaping has been limited.
