HAZELWOOD 鈥 A city park where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is removing soil contaminated with radioactivity from Coldwater Creek is now closed.
Hazelwood City Manager Matt Zimmerman said the decision to close St. Cin Park on Monday came at the request of nearby homeowners.
鈥淭here wasn鈥檛 an issue of public safety at all, but we were addressing the public鈥檚 concerns,鈥 he said.
. It had roped off a section of the park where the cleanup was taking place but residents could still access other areas.
The park will remain closed until the corps completes its cleanup, which could take several more months.

Zimmerman said the corps advised the city that the contamination posed little risk to residents. During a meeting on the cleanup last week, . Several held signs along Lindbergh Boulevard over the weekend protesting the city鈥檚 decision to keep the park open and planned to deliver a petition Monday, said Bridgeton resident Meagan Beckermann.
