Val Ray Pflueger (middle, in the suit and tie), 16, and other students at Cleveland High School were sitting in a classroom on the first day of school in 1944. Val had planned to stop his education after he got a job as an elevator operator in the Cotton Belt Building. He changed his mind after discussing the issue with his parents and a guidance counselor as part of a local and federal effort to keep students in school during the war.
