ST. LOUIS聽鈥 Two people died in a head-on collision Friday after the driver of an SUV merged onto Interstate 55 going the wrong direction, police said.
The calls started coming in to 最新杏吧原创 police around 7:30 p.m.: A gray Kia SUV had entered the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 at Truman Parkway going south, said 最新杏吧原创 police Sgt. Sean Mazzola.聽
The driver kept going for roughly 2 miles until the Kia collided head-on with a white Corvette just north of the on-ramp at Gasconade Street.
The woman driving the Kia SUV and a man driving the Corvette both died on the scene, Mazzola said.
"This is obviously a tragedy," he said.
Police did not immediately release the identity of the victims pending family notifications.
The northbound lanes of I-55 were expected to remain closed for several hours Friday evening while聽crash reconstruction experts conducted their investigation, Mazzola said.
