ST. CHARLES — A prominent St. Charles church wants to bulldoze several buildings bordering a historic district to make room for an expansion of its early childhood program.
Leaders with Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Charles want to demolish six buildings along South Seventh Street and First Capitol Drive, including this house at 201 South Seventh Street. The church wants to make way for a new early childhood education center. Â
The building known as Immanuel Harmony House could soon be demolished after the city's Historic Landmarks Board classified the building as a non-historical structure. The house dates back to the 1850s, and was purchased by the Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Charels in 2011.Â
Historic preservationists in St. Charles have seemingly blocked the demolition of this building at 700 First Capitol Drive. Leaders at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Charles had hoped to raze the former gas station and mechanic's garage to make room for a new early childhood education center.Â
The water rate increases would start this year and go through 2032, totaling $290-$400 more per year for an average residential customer.
